This canyon has an eerie history and is where a number of climbers have died and murders have taken place. Many believe this is why the place is said to be haunted.
The first known death that occurred here was that of Big Elk, a Ute who led 70 of his men to fight a Mormon militia over a land dispute. Big Elk and several of his men were wounded in battle and headed into Rock Canyon to escape. Big Elk died of his wounds near the mouth of the canyon; his wife tried to climb to escape the militia, but fell to her death. Squaw Peak is named after her.
With a bloody history, it's no wonder many people report hearing screams and seeing eerie beings in the canyon. Some people claim to hear phantom footsteps, beating drums and a woman crying loudly.
Witnesses have also claimed to see the apparition of a man in 1970s or 1980s clothing standing on a rock peak. He is said to stare down at the living before running straight towards them at an impossible angle down the steep rock face. He vanishes in to thin air just before he is about to make contact with the ground.
The creek that runs through the canyon is also said to be haunted by a little girl.People claim to see her playing on the rocks in the middle of the water. She's often singing or humming to herself. As they get near, she vanishes.
